School-For-All will serve as a hub for bringing people, ideas, and activities together. The goal is that School-For-All can take place anywhere on Omishima but it's home-base is on the Miyaura Sando. Learn about the building's Past, Present, and Future

Past

Past
History and Stories

In the past this building functioned as a public bath house, known as a sento. The bath house served as a primary (and necessary) gathering space for community members.

It is also known that the owner of the sento, Ishita-san, was very involved with the community. Community groups used to be very active in the area, organizing events, and communication. For example, if a community-members's loved-one passed away off of the island, different members of the community would prepare for the funeral services. The funeral preparations included the making of meals (for the grieving family), hanging black cloths on the street, and hanging decorations. Ishita-san taught everyone how to make and prepare the decorations for such ceremonies.

Context

The old bath house sits almost exactly in the middle of the Miyaura Sando. Below you can see its relationship to other public (labeled in white) and/or active places in the area. The building is about three stroe-fronts away from Home-For-All, a transformed former legal affairs bureau that is and active place of gathering and community involvement. Home-For-All's values and process have inspired School-For-All's essence.

Photos and Videos

Notice the shaved-ice counter (red top) with the hand-written menu signs in the background. You can also see that this sento has the standard floor plan layout where the building is essentially identical on both sides, split for men and women.

Future

The building itself has a very open and welcoming facade. You can notice the awning that remains as well as the smoke-stack in the rear. The smoke stack is a recognizable indicator of the buildings past life as a sento. There is a vacant lot directly across from the building which provides great opportunity for activity.

Guiding Principles

This system utilizes actors and actions that are already occuring on the island and serves as a platform to enhance them. School-For-All is a hub for sharing knowledge, passion, ideas, and community. It is through sharing that we can learn and grow as a community. This Future Lifestyle is already attracting new community members,

School For All not only brings people to the Sando but serves as a gathering point for people to meet, explore and learn about what the rest of the island has to offer. This system simply serves as a hub to highlight and enhance all the great things already happening on Omishima.

In order to address the social challenges Omishima is faced with I have designed a system that ties hardware (existing bathhouse structure) and software (educational system) together to link local and tourists, new activities and old.

Floor Plan

Although the entire building is not accessible, the floor plan of a bath house is rather standard and can be approximated..
